ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd Tritons (7-16-1) dropped both games to the Carson-Newman Eagles (17-5) Monday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex. The Eagles shut out the Tritons in game one of the double-header, 7-0, then taking the game away from Eckerd in the eighth inning in the second game, 13-4.
The Eagles, who is currently ranked 25th in Division II NCAA softball, scored their first run in the first inning on a single to the right side. Eckerd was able to load the bases up to get the run back, but Carson-Newman pitcher Ashley Boyd was able to strike out two Triton batters to end the jammed inning. The Eagles were able to capitalize on errors made by the Tritons to score their second run of the game in the top of the third. They were able to tag on five more runs in the top of the fourth inning, making the score 7-0. Eckerd was able to scatter three hits off the Eagle pitching, but it wasn't enough to get a run across the plate.
Game two was much closer as Carson-Newman took a 1-0 lead in the beginning of the first inning on a throwing flub by the Tritons. Eckerd was able to regain the run back when
Kristen Schurr hit a rocket to right-center field that brought home
Alex Sasso all the way from first base. Both teams had the opportunity to end the game in seven innings, putting runners on the bases, but the defense by both teams enabled the game to go into extra innings.
The Eagles exploded in the eighth inning, combining a total of eight hits off the Eckerd pitching. An error out in right field hurt the Tritons, extending the inning and allowing the Eagles to score 12 runs. Eckerd attempted a comeback in the bottom of the inning as Schurr continued to bring home runs on a two-run double that hit the top of the left-center field fence, but it wasn't enough for the Tritons to gain the lead from Carson-Newman.
Eckerd will continue their busy week as they host Hillsdale College Friday, March 19th, at the Turley Athletic Complex at 5:00 pm.
