CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Triton softball team suffered two more losses during the Eckerd College Triton Spring Invitational, Saturday, February 20th, as they went up against the number sixth team in the nation, Valdosta State University and the University of West Florida. Eckerd lost both games with a 0-8 score.
The Blazers jumped out to a hot start against Triton pitcher Mackenzie Dawson. In the first inning alone, Valdosta State scored four runs with five hits. They added on to their score in the bottom of the third with a home run over the left field fence to bring the sore to 5-0. With another run added in the fourth inning on an error by Eckerd, the Blazers were able to end the game in the bottom of the sixth, run-ruling the Tritons by scoring two more runs to make the final score 8-0.
Valdosta State's pitcher Margaret Carter pitched a hitless game all the way until the fifth inning when Kirsten Cox connected for a base hit in the 5-6 whole. Dawson suffered her fourth loss of the season, giving up 13 hits and seven earned runs.
Game two of the day had the same outcome for Eckerd, losing to the University of West Florida 8-0 in six innings. West Florida took advantage of errors that were made by the Tritons. Four of the eight runs were unearned. Though the Tritons did go scoreless, they were able to get six hits off of the West Florida pitcher, two of which came from Amanda Kolonick and Kristin Schurr, who both went 2-for-3. UWF's pitcher Jillian Lafrance struck out 10 Tritons.
Alex Koronkiewicz took the loss for Eckerd, bringing her record to 2-3. She allowed 12 hits, four earned runs, and struck out four batters.
Eckerd will conclude the Spring Invitation tomorrow, February 21st. Their first game will be up against Flagler College at 11:30 pm, and then take on St. Leo University at 2:00 pm for a non-Sunshine State Conference game.
