WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Ashley Lutz and Taylor Young combined for 32 points to lead the Eckerd College women's basketball team to a 66-53 win at Northwood (Fla.) on Wednesday evening.
Lutz had 17 points, while Young had 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting, as the Tritons (6-2) won for the third time in their last four outings. Tijana Brdar had six points and a game-high six assists.
Lutz and Young combined to shoot 8-for-11 from the field in the first half to help the visitors grab a 37-30 lead at halftime. Young scored the first eight points during an 11-0 run midway through the frame, as the Tritons grabbed a 31-18 lead with 6:28 to play.
Eckerd shot 56 percent during the half and was 5-for-9 (45 percent) from 3-point range.
After Northwood scored the final five points of the first half, the Lady Seahawks scored the opening basket of the second half to cut the margin to 37-32 with 19:21 remaining. But Eckerd responded with a 12-0 run during the next 6:14 to extend the lead to 49-32.
The Tritons held Northwood without a field goal for more than eight minutes.
"We played well offensively in the first half but we didn't get the defensive stops we were capable of," said Eckerd head coach Paul Honsinger. "However, we came out strong defensively to start the second half, and that helped us get out to a comfortable lead."
Eckerd will open up Sunshine State Conference play at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Lynn. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's squad, which will face Lynn at 7:30 p.m.
