BOCA RATON, Fla. - Sophomore guard
Wayne Sears connected on a jumper with three seconds left, lifting the Eckerd Tritons (10-6, 4-3 SSC), winners of four straight, past the Lynn Fighting Knights (10-8, 4-3 SSC) on Saturday afternoon, 58-56, at the DeHornle Center.
In a first half that was largely a defensive struggle, the Tritons climbed out to a 10-2 lead, after a pair of
Zaronn Cann free throws, that they held until the 11:13 mark. At that point, the Knights would go on to outscore the Tritons, 21-11, for the remainder of the half, en route to a 23-21 lead at halftime.
In the first stanza, Eckerd and Lynn shot identical 34.8 field goal percentages while the Tritons out-rebounded the Knights, 19-16.
In the second half, Lynn expanded its lead to 29-21 and then 39-31, but Eckerd would chip away at the lead, finally taking a lead of its own, 52-50, on a jumper by
Lance Kearse with 3:52 to play.
With the Tritons getting ahead by no more than three points, Lynn would tie the game at 56 on a layup by Chris Hall. Sears, however, would have the last word, nailing his game-winning jumper with three seconds left to seal the win for Eckerd.
For the game, Lynn out-shot Eckerd by a slim 44.2 to 43.8 percent margin from the field. Rebounding, however, made all the difference as the Tritons held a 33-26 advantage on the glass.
Kearse led the Tritons with 14 points while Cann added nine points and eight rebounds. Lynn's Jovan Robinson and Brandon Kennedy each led all scorers with 15 points.
Eckerd will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 27 as it hosts SSC rival Rollins at 7:30pm at the McArthur Center.
