After a 5-0 win over Florida Southern last Wednesday, the Eckerd College Men's Soccer team was finally able to clinch a victory at home. The Tritons were able to continue taking steps in the right direction, advancing their record in the SCC to 2-0.
"Any time you can win a game whether its home or away in the league obviously your ecstatic about it," Wisdo said.
During the first half of play, two freshmen,
Turner Humphries and
Matt Duffy, were able to prove why they are assets to the team. With Humphries' first collegiate goal in just the fourth minute of play and Duffy being able to connect with senior
Will Thacker in the 41st minute, that put the Tritons on top and they never looked back.
Coach Wisdo said that Duffy has been able to step in to be a big part of the defensive effort. As for Humphries, he brings something different up top compared to what
Luke Sheekey or
George Marchant bring to the field, thus balancing out the attack and providing a variety of weapons. Being able to rely on different players to fill certain roles on the field gives the Tritons an advantage over their opponents.
The Tritons have been able to connect with each other and finish offensively. However, more importantly, the defense has been able to improve with each game. If the defense continues to work hard it will be very hard for other teams to break the Tritons down, and this ultimately will create more opportunities to score goals.
Coach Wisdo believes that the Tritons defense is on its way to being the strength of the team. He would really like to be able to say, "we are difficult to play against, people do not like to play us because we do not let them have many chances...we are difficult to break down...if we can do that then we set ourselves up with the attacking players that we have to punish teams on the other end."
Tuesday night the team plays its most important game of the season according to Coach Wisdo. The team is up against Saint Leo, who currently is 3-4, 0-1 in SCC play on the season. This is the third conference game for the Tritons and also is a region game. In order to come out victorious and stay undefeated in the conference, the Tritons need to play to their full potential.
Coach Wisdo says of the match up, "We hope to play well. If we play well I think everything else will take care of itself."
