Softball blanks PBA for series-opening win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons softball team won the first game of a three-game series on Friday, defeating the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish by a score of 4-0.

Both starting pitchers worked around base runners in the opening inning before throwing three-up, three-down innings in the second to keep the game scoreless. Eckerd got on the board in the second on a pair of hits, beginning with Hannah Taylor's RBI single to bring in Maddie Bostack, who walked to get on base. Ella Coiner followed with an RBI during the next at-bat to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Tritons.

A quick fourth inning came next, but Eckerd added two more to its total in the fifth. Two of the first three batters reached base, setting up an RBI double by Taylor to extend the lead out to three. The double is the 18th for Taylor on the season, which is a new program record and breaks a 33-year mark that was set by Sherry Howell in 1993. Coiner collected her second RBI of the game with a sac fly to follow and make it a 4-0 contest.

Palm Beach Atlantic notched its first and only hit of the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Brandilyn Reymer worked around the runner to keep the Sailfish scoreless. Reymer retired the side in order in the seventh to complete the shutout win.

The Tritons improve to 24-6 with the win and 14-2 in the SSC. Games two and three will take place tomorrow.
