ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons softball team split a pair of games on Saturday with the visiting Florida Tech Panthers to earn a series win. Florida Tech took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 8-0 before Eckerd notched a 4-0 triumph in the finale.
In game one, the visitors scored in each of the first four innings to build an 8-0 lead. The Tritons saw two hits in the first and one in each of the third, fourth, and fifth frames, but the eight-run differential after five innings ended the game by run rule.
Ella Coiner picked up two hits in game one, while
Julia Heter struck out four in relief on the mound.
In game two, Eckerd got the bats going early with three runs in its opening at-bat. Two players went yard in the frame, beginning with a two-run shot from
Hannah Taylor for the early lead. Two batters later,
Faith Wharton launched her sixth of the season to make it a 3-0 contest. The Panthers saw its only base runner through the first six innings come in the first.
Brandilyn Reymer retired 18 in a row after hitting a batter and lost a no-hitter with one out in the seventh. She worked around a runner on second in the final frame to complete the one-hit shutout, striking out 11 and not allowing a walk. The Tritons saw their fourth run of the game come in on a bases-loaded hit by pitch issued to
Kinsley Castro in the fifth.Â
Reymer secured her 17th win of the season on the mound, while the Tritons as a team improved to 29-8 overall.Â
Eckerd will hit the road to face Rollins next weekend.Â
