ST. PETERSBURG – The Eckerd Tritons softball team earned a 2-0 shutout victory on Friday to begin a weekend series with the Florida Tech Panthers.
Starting pitcher
Brandilyn Reymer worked around two hits in the opening at-bat for the Panthers, ending the threat with a play at the plate that kept the visitors off the board. Eckerd tallied one in the bottom half after
Ella Coiner launched her 12th home run of the season to put the Tritons on top.
Reymer struck out the next five batters she faced following the first inning and did not allow another hit until the fourth. By that time, the Tritons doubled their advantage following an RBI double from
Hannah Taylor in the third, bringing around
Lex Difato who walked on eight pitches with two outs.
The Tritons continued to flash strong defense to keep the shutout intact. With two runners on for Florida Tech in the sixth,
Gracie Ciccarello threw out a batter at first after collecting a deflected ball. Reymer struck out the next batter with runners on second and third to end the inning. She then struck out two in the seventh to complete the shutout.
Reymer ended with 13 strikeouts on the mound. Each team posted four hits.
Games two and three will take place tomorrow.
