ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons softball team won the first of a three-game series on Friday, defeating the visiting Florida Southern Mocs by a score of 4-1.
Eckerd struck first with two in its opening at-bat, which began with a one-out single from
Hannah Taylor.
Ella Coiner drove a triple to deep center field to bring in Taylor before coming in to score on
Jazz Jones' single during the ensuing at-bat. The Tritons led 2-0 after the first inning.
Starting pitcher
Brandilyn Reymer did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Mocs not only tallied their first hit in the frame, but pushed across their first run to cut the deficit in half. Eckerd registered an out at the plate in the top half of the inning to keep the visitors at just one run scored.
The Tritons added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth after Coiner and
Faith Wharton went deep back-to-back. Reymer allowed just one hit through the final three innings to keep the Mocs at one.
Coiner led the Tritons with two hits and two runs batted in, while Reymer struck out seven and won her 10th game of the season on the mound.
Games two and three of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon.
