ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons softball team completed a three-game sweep of the Florida Southern Mocs on Saturday, winning the final two games of the series by scores of 8-1 and 2-1.
In game one, Eckerd struck first after
Ella Coiner blasted a three-run home run in the opening inning to put the Tritons on top. A scoreless second inning followed, but the Tritons continued to pour it on with a two-spot in each of the third and fourth.
Coiner began the third with a walk and stole both second and third before
Faith Wharton lifted a ball over the outfield fence for the team's second homer of the game.
Hannah Taylor added on to the Tritons' total in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, while
Jazz Jones worked a bases-loaded walk to make it a 7-0 lead. The Mocs earned one back in the fifth, but Eckerd countered with another in the sixth on Taylor's solo home run.Â
Elise Roy allowed just one run and four hits to earn her seventh win on the mound this season.
A pitcher's duel followed in game two, with neither team pushing across any runs through the first three innings of play. Eckerd delivered the game's first tally in the fourth on a leadoff home run from Coiner, her second of the game and third of the weekend.
Maddie Bostack contributed an RBI with a two-out single later in the frame to bring in the team's second run.
Starting pitcher
Brandilyn Reymer did not allow a hit until the final inning, which proved to be a major comeback threat by the Mocs. The visitors saw the first three batters in the seventh reach base via a hit, with the third being a double that brought in a run. Facing runners on second and third with nobody out, Reymer worked a strikeout before Jones threw out a runner at home on a groundball during the ensuing at-bat. Reymer got out of the jam with another strikeout, her 12th of the game, to seal the 2-1 win.
With the victories, the Tritons are now 20-6 on the season and 10-2 in conference. The team will visit Flagler on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.Â
