ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons baseball team won its 10th straight game on Friday, opening a three-game series against the Lynn Fighting Knights with a 10-4 victory.
Following a scoreless inning both ways, the teams saw an eventful second inning.
Grady Bivens worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the top half to keep the visitors off the board before the Tritons erupted for seven runs in the bottom. Eckerd loaded the bases with just one out, and
Ean Gimson brought in the first tally with a single to right field. A bunt base hit from
Corey Hodierne delivered their second run of the game, while an error on the same play by Lynn brought in the third. Another miscue during the next at-bat continued the inning and made it a 4-0 contest, and a wild pitch added one more to the Tritons' total.
Christian Cabina capped off the scoring surge with a two-run home run, giving Eckerd a 7-0 lead after two innings.Â
An RBI groundout from Gimson in the fourth extended the margin to eight runs, and the Tritons tallied two more in the sixth on a
Hunter Rebhan sac fly and
Kam Gelwick RBI infield single. Lynn scored its four runs in the final three innings, but Eckerd used two relievers to close the game out and seal the six-run win.
Bivens earned the win on the mound to improve to 5-0 on the season, striking out seven and not allowing a run.
Nick Rainey struck out six in relief, while Hodierne led the offense with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.
Eckerd now sits at 14-4 on the season. Games two and three of the series will take place tomorrow.
