ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons baseball team split the final two games against the Lynn Fighting Knights on Saturday, falling in game one by a score of 15-7 before taking the finale with a score of 11-6.
In game one,
Hunter Rebhan delivered the game's first run with an RBI single in the first, but Lynn responded with two in the second and third innings each, followed by eight in the fourth. The Tritons cut into the 12-1 deficit with a four-spot in the bottom half of the fourth, seeing a run-scoring hit from
Corey Hodierne before
Kam Gelwick launched a three-run home run over the right-center fence.Â
Rebhan and
Luis Garrido each picked up RBI in the sixth to inch the Tritons closer, but the Fighting Knights added three in the final two innings to complete the 15-7 win and even the series.
In game two, Eckerd fell behind early after Lynn sent home three in its opening at-bat. The Tritons earned two back in the bottom half after a leadoff home run by
Ean Gimson and a run-scoring hit from
Christian Cabina.Â
The two teams played a scoreless second before another busy inning in the third. The visitors added on to their lead with a pair of runs, but were answered by
Dawson Jones' RBI single in the bottom half to keep Eckerd within two. Lynn added one more in the fifth and took a 6-3 lead into the seventh.
The Tritons stormed back to take the lead behind power hitting in the seventh, posting three home runs in four at-bats to turn a three-run deficit into a 7-6 advantage. Rebhan and Gelwick began the frame with back-to-back homers, and Cabina followed with an infield single to keep the hitting streak alive. During the next at-bat, Garrido sent a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence to put the team out in front.
Eckerd added two more in the eighth to build a five-run cushion, and
Rocco Calise worked around two base runners in the ninth to secure the win on the mound.
The Tritons belted 19 hits as a team, with Gimson, Cabina, and Garrido each tallying three apiece.
Eckerd will be back in action Tuesday vs. Purdue Northwest.
