BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team used a strong defensive showing to defeat the Lynn Fighting Knights on Wednesday by a score of 65-40.
Lynn was the first to score after a three-pointer gave the home team an early lead. The Tritons answered with nine straight points, highlighted by six points from
Ieva Korzane, to give Eckerd a six-point lead around the halfway point of the period. A defensive battle ensued, with the two teams combining for 10 points in the final 4:26. The Tritons shot 31 percent, but held the Fighting Knights to just a 25 percent clip to lead 12-10 after 10 minutes.
The first five minutes of the second quarter belonged to Lynn, using a 9-2 advantage to take a 19-14 lead. From there, the Tritons were dominant, scoring the game's next 11 points and holding the home team to just a single point through the final 5:09. Korzane mirrored her first-quarter production with nine points in the second to give her 18 in just the first half. The Tritons led 32-20 at the break after holding Lynn below 30 percent shooting for the second straight quarter.Â
Eckerd broke the game open in the third quarter, limiting Lynn to just one made field goal and outscoring the home team 25-7 over the 10-minute stretch. The Tritons extended the scoring run that closed the second quarter well into the third, holding the Fighting Knights without a made basket for more than 13 minutes of game time. After trailing 19-14 halfway through second quarter, Eckerd surged ahead to a 57-27 advantage by the end of the third. Lynn held a slight 13-8 margin in the fourth to bring the score to its 65-40 final.
Korzane led the way with 23 points and five assists, while
Lisa Michaelsen added 14 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
Emma Egan filled up the stat sheet with eight points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
As a team, Eckerd held Lynn to just 26 percent shooting and 20 percent from three-point range.Â
The Tritons improve to 21-5 overall with the win and 16-3 in the SSC. The team can clinch a regular season title with a win at home vs. Barry on Saturday.
