LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team saw its nine-game winning streak halted by the Florida Southern Moccasins on Wednesday, falling by a score of 69-53.
The teams traded baskets through the opening possessions, with Eckerd grabbing a pair of early leads behind a three from Lisa Michaelsen and a layup by Ieva Korzane. Florida Southern answered with a three near the seven-minute mark to reclaim the advantage and ignite a 15-4 run to close the quarter. Emma Egan's layup at the 4:06 mark pulled the Tritons within one at 10-9, but the Mocs closed the frame on a 9-0 surge to take a 19-9 lead into the second.
Florida Southern stretched its advantage to as many as 15 twice in the opening two minutes of the second quarter. Facing a 13-point deficit midway through the period, Egan sparked a 7-0 Triton run, as Eckerd held the Mocs scoreless for more than two minutes to trim the margin to 28-22. The Mocs pushed the lead back to double digits late, but a basket from Jaylen Ostenson just before the break sent the Tritons into halftime trailing 32-24.
The Mocs saw a big third quarter, pushing their advantage out to as many as 22 before taking a 21-point cushion into the fourth. Eckerd got within 12 in the final period, but ended up falling by 16 despite out-scoring Florida Southern through the final 10 minutes.
Korzane led the Tritons with 18 points, while Egan added a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Eckerd will be back in action Saturday at Palm Beach Atlantic.
