Women's soccer downs Tampa to advance to SSC Championship

ST. PETERSBURG – A pair of goals from Nell Doe just 83 seconds apart propelled the Eckerd women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Tampa in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Tournament semifinals on Thursday night at Johnson Field, sending the Tritons to the conference championship game.

Tampa applied pressure early, forcing Madi Winn into three saves in the opening 17 minutes. Eckerd began to find its rhythm midway through the half, with Freija Aflenzer striking the left post in the 23rd minute.

The Tritons broke through in the 37th minute when Caroline Buckley found the back of the net on a header off an assist from Lisa Furéh. The goal marked Buckley's first of the season and came just 36 seconds after entering the contest.

Tampa responded in the 44th minute to level the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Eckerd came out aggressive in the second half, generating three corner kicks in the opening 12 minutes. Doe broke the deadlock at the 66:23 mark off an assist from Aflenzer, giving Eckerd a 2-1 advantage. Just 83 seconds later, Doe struck again, this time off a feed from Helen Scheer to extend the lead to 3-1.

Eckerd added an insurance goal in the 77th minute as Amy Woodhead converted a penalty kick to push the advantage to 4-1 and seal the victory.

Winn finished with five saves in goal, including a pair in the second half following Doe's two goals. Tampa held a narrow 11-10 advantage in shots, while Eckerd placed five attempts on target and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

The victory extended Eckerd's unbeaten streak to 11 games and secured the Tritons a spot in the SSC Tournament championship.

Eckerd will host the No. 2 seed and No. 13 nationally-ranked Nova Southeastern on Sunday in the title game at home.
