CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Eckerd sailing team competed at the Charleston Fall Interconference, finishing tied for first place out of 15 teams.
On Saturday, the Tritons rigged up before being placed on a wind hold until 12:30 p.m. Sailors were sent out at 12:45 p.m., with 15 teams competing in both A and B divisions.
The A Division opened the regatta in 420s with Jordan Vieira and Angelina Manchuk, while PJ Rodrigues and Peyton Seidle represented Eckerd in B Division. Racing took place at Crab Bank in an ebbing current, with winds of 5-6 knots and gusts reaching eight knots.
Four races were completed before storms moved into the area and ended racing for the day. Avery Guck replaced Manchuk as crew for Vieira in the fourth and final race.
Eckerd ended day one in fourth place overall with 45 points. The A Division team sat in sixth with 27 points, while B Division totaled 18 points.
On Sunday, sailors were sent out immediately in hopes of completing as many races as possible before the 3 p.m. cutoff. Eckerd opened the day in dominant fashion, with both divisions winning their first race. Vieira and Guck took the victory in A Division, while Rodrigues and Seidle earned the win in B Division.
From there, the Tritons steadily climbed the standings and moved into contention for the overall title. Four additional races were completed in winds of 5-6 knots, with gusts reaching as high as 12 knots.
Around 1 p.m., the wind died during an A Division race. A Division was sent back in while officials attempted to get another B Division race completed, but after approximately 20 minutes, B Division was also sent in due to unfavorable conditions. Race 9A was ultimately voided.
Eckerd finished tied for first overall but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker to Charleston. A Division finished tied for third with 45 points, while B Division won its division with 31 points.
The Tritons return to action at the ACC Qualifier hosted by St. Mary's College on October 10-11.
