ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Eckerd sailing team placed 11th out of 17 teams at the Open Atlantic Coast Championships Round 1A over the weekend.
The Tritons opened competition on Saturday at the St. Mary's College Sailing Center, with racing beginning at 10:50 a.m. in steady northerly winds ranging from 6-9 knots. Both A and B divisions competed simultaneously, with Jordan Vieira and Avery Guck representing Eckerd in A Division, while PJ Rodrigues and Peyton Seidle sailed in B Division.
Despite shifting winds that created challenging racing conditions, the teams completed all 10 scheduled races on Saturday. Eckerd ended the opening day in 10th place overall with 169 points, just 14 points behind Connecticut College and within striking distance of the ninth-place finish needed to advance to the Atlantic Coast Championship. A Division finished the day in 10th with 93 points, while B Division stood seventh with 76 points.
Sunday brought rainy conditions, light winds, and strong easterly gusts as the teams returned to the water for the final four races. Will Alvarado stepped in for Guck to crew alongside Verria in A Division as Eckerd looked to move into the top nine.
The Tritons ultimately finished 11th overall with 259 points, earning a berth in the Atlantic Coast Tournament at Connecticut College in two weeks. A Division placed 12th with 144 points, while B Division finished 10th with 115 points.
Eckerd returns to action at the Nevins Trophy on October 17-18.
