ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team tied a school record for threes in a game on Wednesday night, draining 20 triples on its way to an 88-64 victory over the Rollins Tars.
Jaylen Ostenson earned the first points of the game on a layup off the jump ball, but her bucket served as the only two-point make of the period for the Tritons as the team closed out the first 10 minutes with nine made threes.
Ieva Korzane hit the first two long balls for Eckerd, followed by one by Ostenson and another from
Kailyn Terrell to put the team up double figures at 14-2 just three minutes in. Korzane notched her third of the frame moments later before
Savannah Borowicz accounted for the next three.
Greta Carollo's three-pointer on the team's final possession made it a 29-14 advantage for the Tritons entering the second.
The onslaught of triples continued into the second quarter, with the first six made field goals all coming from behind the three-point line. Korzane and Borowicz both connected on their fourth made shot from deep in the quarter, while
Hekla Nokkvadottir also joined in with a pair from beyond the arc. Eckerd saw its cushion reach as many as 22 on three different occasions in the period and led by 19 with a score of 53-34. The team hit 15-26 with three in the half, including a 6-8 mark in the second quarter.
The Tritons continued to build onto their lead in the third, this time seeing shots go in from all over the floor.
Emma Egan collected a pair of layups to give Eckerd a 23-point advantage early on before following another three by Terrell with her third basket of the frame to extend the margin to 26. The Tritons used a 10-2 to close the third quarter and grab their largest lead of the contest at 77-48, seeing five points apiece from both Egan and Korzane during that span. The Tars out-scored the Tritons by three through the final 10 minutes to bring the final score to 88-64.
Eckerd shot 52 percent overall from the field and knocked 20 of its 47 looks from deep. The 20 makes are tied for the most in program record, matching the 20 in 37 tries against Albany State back in 2019. Korzane led the way with 19 points, while Egan added 16. Borowicz was next with 14 off the bench, and Terrell also reached double figures with 13. The team also tied season high in assists at 27, with Ostenson grabbing a game-best seven.
With the win, the Tritons improve to 10-4 overall and will be back in action next Wednesday at Saint Leo.
