Women's basketball takes down No. 14 Embry-Riddle

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team collected its fifth straight win after beating the No. 14 ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday by a score of 73-55.

The Tritons set the tone early, surging to a 25-12 advantage through the first 10 minutes of action. Eckerd shot 47 percent from the floor in the opening quarter, knocking down nine field goals, including three from beyond the arc. A three from Savannah Borowicz made it 16-8 with 3:35 remaining and sparked a 12-4 run to close the period. Emma Egan capped the quarter with a basket at the buzzer, sending Eckerd into the second with a 13-point lead.

Lisa Michaelsen opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to give Eckerd its largest lead of the half at 16. Embry-Riddle responded with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the margin to single digits, but a triple from Greta Carollo moments later pushed the advantage back to 12. It marked the first of three triples in the quarter for Carollo, who scored the Tritons' next nine points after the Eagles pulled within nine. The teams played to an even 16-16 tally in the second period, allowing Eckerd to carry its 13-point cushion into halftime with a 41-28 lead. The Eagles held a slight two-point advantage through the third quarter, setting up a 55-44 lead for the Tritons entering the fourth.

An Embry-Riddle three on the opening possession of the fourth quarter pulled the Eagles within eight, their closest margin of the second half. Eckerd quickly responded with back-to-back triples from Michaelsen and Ieva Korzane to stretch the lead to 14. Three minutes later, Borowicz buried threes on consecutive possessions to put the game out of reach at 67-49. Korzane followed with the Tritons' next four points, and Egan put the exclamation point on the win with a layup on Eckerd's final possession.

Egan paced the Tritons with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Jaylen Ostenson chipped in 12 points and four assists. Michaelsen filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 12 rebounds, six steals, and four blocks. Carollo added 11 points off the bench.

With the win, Eckerd moves into a tie for second in the SSC and sits at 14-4 overall and 9-2 in conference. The team will be back in action Wednesday at No. 4 Nova Southeastern.
