CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Eckerd Tritons women's soccer team will open its season Friday, Sept. 5 with a road matchup against the Delta State Statesmen before heading to Memphis, Tenn. to face the Christian Brothers Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 7.
Eckerd is coming off a 4-6-6 record in 2024, having gone unbeaten in three of its final four games to earn the No. 6 seed in the SSC Tournament. The Tritons return their top scorer from last season
Freija Aflenzer, who posted five goals and an assist in 16 games played. She also led the team in both shots and shots on goals.
Jillian Doerger, who tied for the team lead in assists with three in 2024, also returns for Eckerd, while two others in
Abby Knipp and
Rakel Holmarsdottir are back after starting all 16 games last season.
Delta State, the Tritons' opponent on Friday, was 5-5-6 in 2024 and 2-1-4 on its home field. The Statesmen closed the regular season with an unbeaten streak of three to help push them into the conference tournament, where they eventually fell 2-0 to Union (Tenn.).
Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
On Sunday, the Tritons will travel north to face Christian Brothers, who ended 2024 with an 0-15-1 record. The team's lone tie came on its home field, a 1-1 draw with Lee late in the season.Â
This weekend will be the eighth all-time matchup between the Buccaneers and Tritons, with Christian Brothers holding a 5-2 advantage in the series. The two teams squared off last season in St. Petersburg, resulting in a 4-0 win for the Tritons.Â
Start time for Friday's contest will begin at 3 p.m. ET, with Sunday's set to take place at 1 p.m ET.
