ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Behind a double-double from Chance Bucher, including a career-high 30 points, the Eckerd women's basketball team downed Barry 61-51 in the opening round of the SSC Tournament on Tuesday night.
Eckerd led wire-to-wire as a Bucher triple to start the game put Eckerd on top. EC held a 10-3 favor until the four-minute mark before taking a 15-9 lead at the end of the frame. A 10-2 run to start the second period gave the Tritons a double-digit lead before pushing out to a 16-point lead. Eckerd held a 31-17 favor at the break.
The Tritons' offense slowed to start the second half while the Bucs cut their deficit to 11. However, Bucher added five straight points to give EC a 16-point lead before taking a 44-32 advantage at the end of the frame. Barry managed to cut their deficit to nine several times in the final frame, but each time Eckerd answered. In the final minute, BU added seven straight points to pull within six, but Ieva Korzane made all four of her free throws to seal the win.
