Eckerd Cruises Past Moccasins

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's basketball team capped off National Girls and Women in Sports day with a dominant 78-54 victory over conference rival Florida Southern at the McArthur Center on Wednesday night.

After the Mocs got the tilt on the opening basket, they quickly let up the lead and never regained it for the rest of the game. Greta Carollo ignited the Tritons with 13 points in the opening frame. She found herself wide open at the free throw line, shooting 7-for-8 from the floor through the first two quarters, and 2-for-3 from distance. Ieva Korzane was also a top Triton contributor, with eight points in the first half. Carollo netted 16 points in the first half, propelling the Tritons to sit comfortably at 40-25 at the break.

The Tritons kept their foot on the gas, working up to a 20-point favor by the end of the third quarter. Chance Bucher hit a pair of triples in the frame, while Lisa Michaelsen shot 3-for-6 from the floor for a 58-38 Eckerd advantage heading into the final period of action. The Tritons found themselves with a 30-point favor at the 7:02 mark of the fourth quarter. The Moccasins were barely able to chip away, narrowing their deficit back into the 20's. A six-point run for the Mocs in the final three minutes of the game were the last glimmer of hope before Martyna Kowalska countered with five unanswered points. The final minute of the game went scoreless for Eckerd to secure the 78-54 victory.
