ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's tennis team swept Bates (Maine), 7-0 at the Bullard Courts on Friday afternoon.
The Tritons (2-1) swept the Bobcats (1-3) after taking the doubles point in a split decision and sweeping all six singles matches.
After falling behind 1-0 in the No. 3 spot of the doubles point, Catherine Cole and Olivia Lindestaf took the No. 2 doubles for the point to be decided in the top pairing. The Tritons' top duo of Kylie Misdorp and Fiona Orza battled hard to take the No. 1 doubles 7-5, giving Eckerd the early advantage 1-0.
Misdorp made quick work of her opponent Isabella Saul in singles play with a pair of 6-0 victories in the No. 2 position. Lindestaf and Orza rounded out the top three singles with two-set victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
Cole rallied back from a 6-3 loss in set one, to take set two 6-1. A third set thriller saw Cole come out on top, taking the No. 4 spot 11-9 in set three. Maya Soligo and Laura Ullrich completed the sweep in the No. 5 and 6 positions, with another pair of two-set victories.
The Tritons hit the road for the first match of the year, facing Saint Leo at 3:00 PM on Wednesday.
