LAKELAND, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team fell to Florida Southern, 12-2, in its first midweek matchup of the season at Henley Field on Tuesday night.
The Moccasins struck first in the opening frame, capitalizing on a throwing error before an RBI single by Thoroman. Florida Southern broke the game open in the third, scoring three runs, including a two-run homer by Mikey Scott. Eckerd responded in the fifth with a solo shot from Ryan Gargett, but Florida Southern's attack continued with Ahmad Fitts launching his first of three homeruns, extending the lead to 7-1.
Eckerd added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Reid Lisle, but it wasn't enough to shift momentum. Fitts delivered the final blow in the bottom of the inning, with a grand slam to push the margin to 11-2. Florida Southern tacked on one more in the eighth with Fitts' third homer of the night, to close the game 12-2.
