ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team earned its sixth straight victory and capped off a four-game home stand on Saturday with a 65-54 win over the visiting Lynn Fighting Knights.
Eckerd controlled the first quarter of action and posted a 20-9 advantage after 10 minutes of play. After falling behind 4-0, the Tritons rattled off eight straight points, highlighted by a three-pointer from
Jaylen Ostenson. Baskets by
Emma Egan and
Kailyn Terrell made it a 12-6 cushion around the halfway mark of the frame before Terrell's triple at 3:41 began a 9-1 scoring run to close out the quarter. Eckerd held Lynn without a made field goal in the final 3:51 of the first and took an 11-point lead into the second after hitting 47 percent of its looks.
In the second, the Tritons posted an 8-3 advantage through the opening three minutes to obtain their largest lead of the game at the time at 28-12.
Hekla Nokkvadottir's three-pointer with three minutes to go in the half broke a two-minute scoring drought for the Tritons and reclaimed a 16-point cushion for the team before
Lisa Michaelsen's layup with a minute remaining moved the margin out to 18. A last-minute basket from the Knights brought the score to 37-21 in favor of Eckerd at the break. The Tritons held the Fighting Knights to just three made field goals at 25 percent shooting in the second quarter.Â
The two teams exchanged successful possessions to begin the third until another Terrell three extended the differential to 17 at 42-25 and fueled an 8-2 spurt to help Eckerd reach a 20-point lead. Lynn doubled up Eckerd in the final six minutes and eventually won the quarter with a slight 16-15 score to cut the gap to 15.
Savannah Borowicz' layup at the seven-minute mark in the fourth moved the lead back over 20 points for the Tritons. Lynn notched the game's final nine points to trim the end margin at a 65-54 final score.
Egan posted a double-double by halftime and notched her fifth straight after an 18-point, 12-rebound effort. Michaelsen was next in scoring with 13 points to go with two blocks, while Terrell contributed eight points and five assists.
The Tritons improve to 6-2 with the win and 3-0 in the SSC. The team will take on Florida Tech next on Dec. 16.
