Volleyball sees season end in NCAA Regionals

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons volleyball team saw its season come to an end in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional on Thursday, falling to the No. 3 nationally-ranked Barry Buccaneers by a score of 3-0.

The Tritons began the match strong, quickly doubling up the Bucs at a score of 4-2 after seeing kills from three different players a joint block by Peyton Walker and Kinga Michalska. Barry answered with a 7-1 scoring run to regain the lead and swiftly extended its advantage out to nine after reaching 20 points. Jaelynn Tunley notched a pair of kills late in the frame, but the Buccaneers took the opener by a score of 25-13.

A back-and-forth second set ensued, with Eckerd again starting off fast with a 5-2 lead. After the Bucs evened the score at 9-9, neither team saw a lead of more than two points all the way through to a 20-20 deadlock. The Tritons erased several two-point deficits along the way to get to that point, but Barry rattled off the final five points of the set to earn a 25-20 victory. The Bucs built a comfortable cushion in the third, reaching a margin of as many as eight at 17-9 and then nine at 21-12. Two straight kills by Kaitlyn Dohs and another from Gabi Jedrzejczak gave the Tritons some life and pulled the team within six, followed by a 3-1 scoring spurt later on to make it a 24-20 game. Barry won the next rally to grab the 3-0 match victory.

Michalska posted a team-high 11 kills, while Dohs hit .308 on the day and added six. Jedrzejczak collected 27 assists.

Eckerd ends its season with a 19-13 record.
