Five Tritons reach double figures in win over UIndy

TAMPA, Fla. -- Five different Tritons reached double figures in scoring on Sunday as the Eckerd men's basketball team capped off a 2-0 weekend at the Tampa Classic with an 84-77 win over the Indianapolis Greyhounds.

Jacob Davis notched the first points of the game on Eckerd's opening possession, but the Tritons trailed for the next six minutes after an Indy three-pointer quickly moved them in front. Wyatt Triestman regained the lead around the 14-minute mark and the two teams battled back and forth through the remainder of the half, with neither holding an advantage of more than four points. The Greyhounds saw their biggest margin of four come at 29-25 with a little over three minutes to spare, but Miquel Llompart collected five of the next six points for Eckerd to help pull the team even at 31. Tim Taiwo's layup on the Tritons' final possession propelled them back into the lead at a score of 33-31 entering the halftime break. Eckerd shot 45 percent in the opening 20 minutes and held Indy to just 30 percent.

In the second, Eckerd posted its largest lead of the game early on after grabbing the first three points, but lost it 90 seconds later after the Greyhounds rattled off an 8-2 surge to go up 39-38. The two teams exchanged baskets until the Tritons once again saw a five-point cushion following a Wyatt Triestman three around the 14-minute mark. After a basket on Indy's next possession, Eckerd went on an 8-0 scoring run to extend the margin out to double figures, highlighted by three-pointers from both Triestman and Llompart during that span. The Greyhounds cut the deficit to six points on two separate occasions over the next nine minutes of action, but each time the Tritons responded and pushed the differential back out to double-digits. Indy eventually got within five at 1:15 and again at 45 seconds left, but Eckerd saw a 9-11 shooting effort from the free-throw line down the stretch to keep its distance.

Llompart led a balanced attack with 19 points and five made threes, while Triestman was next with 16 points. David added 12 and Koa Baker posted 11 points to go with eight rebounds, while Taiwo added 10 off the bench.

With the victory, the team improves to 7-4 on the season and will return home to face No. 5 Nova Southeastern on New Year's Eve.
