LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team started off the Florida Southern Holiday Classic with a dominant 102-46 victory over the Erskine Fighting Fleet on Friday afternoon.
The Tritons scored the first 10 points of the contest and held Erskine without a field goal through the first 3:30 of action.
Lisa Michaelsen's three-pointer countered a triple from the Fleet and Eckerd held a double-digit advantage over the next five minutes.
Hekla Nokkvadottir sent in a layup with 49 seconds left to push the margin back out to double figures and make it a 24-13 lead in favor of Eckerd entering the second quarter. The Tritons' defense shined in the second period, holding Erskine to just two points on 1-10 shooting. Eckerd began the frame on a 12-0 run before the Fleet's first field goal came at 3:36. Nokkvadottir accounted for six of the team's final seven points and the Tritons led 43-15 at the break.Â
It was a high-scoring third quarter both ways, with Eckerd holding a 27-21 advantage through the 10 minutes of play.
Emma Egan's jumper early on gave the Tritons their first 30-point differential before they saw it reach as many as 34 later in the quarter. Eckerd countered Erskine's best shooting quarter with a 58 percent effort from the floor to add to its cushion entering the fourth. The Tritons made a game-best 13 shots, four of which were three-pointers, in a 32-point final quarter to run away with the 56-point victory.Â
Friday marks the first time reaching 100 points in a game for the Tritons since November of 2019, a 109-57 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. All 10 players who entered the game scored in the victory, led by Nokkvadottir's 23 points to go with her nine rebounds.
Savannah Borowicz notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Egan added 12 points and
Sarah Racaud contributed 11. Eckerd posted 27 assists on 38 made shots.
With the win, the Tritons' win streak reaches eight. The team will close out the classic tomorrow vs. Southern Wesleyan.
