Women's basketball collects win over Barry in conference opener

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Eckerd women's basketball team picked up a road victory over the Barry Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon, winning by a score of 81-54 in both team's conference opener.

The two teams battled back and forth to begin the opening quarter, with neither holding a lead of more than one possession until Kailyn Terrell's three-point play with just over three minutes remaining put the Tritons up 15-10. The bucket helped fuel a 14-5 run for Eckerd to close out the period, seeing a triple from Terrell cap out the quarter to give them a 23-15 after 10 minutes of play. Ieva Korzane's consecutive three-pointers early in the second gave the Tritons their biggest margin of the first half at 29-17, and the team remained out in front by double digits through the half's final whistle. The Tritons shot over 55 percent after two quarters of play and led 43-33 at the break.

Barry got within five halfway through the third quarter at 45-40, byt Emma Egan's basket broke a five-minute scoreless streak for the Tritons to halt the momentum. Eckerd fought off another mini scoring outburst from the Bucs that brought the margin down to six later in the frame, but back-to-back triples by Egan and Korzane accounted for the final points of the period to give Eckerd a 58-46 advantage entering the fourth. The Tritons out-scored the Buccaneers 23-8 in the fourth after making as many shots as Barry attempted to run away with the game. Eckerd shot 50 percent or better in all four periods.

Four players scored in double figures for the Tritons, led by Korzane's 19 and Terrell's 18 off the bench on 5-9 shooting and 4-8 mark from deep. Egan notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Lisa Michaelsen also contributed 10 points.

With the win, the Tritons improve to 2-2 on the season. The team will be back in action Thursday to begin the home Thanksgiving Classic.
