Women's basketball defeated by West Florida

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Eckerd women's basketball team was defeated by the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday on the campus of Valdosta State, falling by a score of 72-60.

After finding themselves in a 9-9 tie seven minutes in, West Florida broke away from the deadlock with a 12-5 run to close out the frame and take a 21-14 lead into the second. The Argos shot 60 percent through the first 10 minutes and held Eckerd to just 26 percent shooting the ball to help build a seven-point cushion.

The Tritons had their best offensive showing of the game come in the second period, out-scoring West Florida 25-18 to make it a 39-39 game at the halftime break. Despite falling behind by double digits at 30-20, Eckerd rattled off a 19-9 scoring outburst in the final six minutes to pull even, seeing three-pointers by Sarah Racaud and Jaylen Ostenson during that span and four points apiece from both Ieva Korzane and Emma Egan. Eckerd shot 61 percent and hit seven throws in the high-scoring second quarter.

The Argonauts held a slight 17-15 advantage in the third to move into the fourth with a 56-54 lead. Egan and Korzane each connected on triples during the third and the team remained within just two points despite being out-shot both from the floor and behind the three-point line. West Florida took control with a 16-6 margin in the fourth to pull away for the 12-point win.

Five players reached double figures for Eckerd, led by Egan's 14 points and nine rebounds. Korzane, Ostenson, and Racaud each added 11, while Hekla Nokkvadottir contributed 10 off he bench.

The Tritons will return to action next Wednesday at No. 24 Columbus State.
