Tritons take down Lions in straight sets

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons volleyball team made quick work of the Saint Leo Lions on Thursday, winning in straight sets on the road.

It was a dominant showing for the Tritons in the opening game, allowing just four kills for the Lions and holding them to a hitting percentage of -0.242 on their way to a 25-11 win. Eckerd held a lead early of as many as four before Saint Leo got within two at 9-7. From there, the Tritons rattled off 11 straight points off of the serve of Sydney Williams to run away with the set. Kinga Michalska and Peyton Walker were each apart of two blocks during the scoring run, while Gabi Jedrzejczak notched a pair of kills from the setter position. The Tritons closed out the opening frame on a 16-4 run to win 25-11.

The two teams traded rally wins to begin the second and the Tritons found themselves trailing a few times before overcoming a 9-8 deficit with seven of the game's next nine points. Eckerd never trailed the rest of the way and used a 7-2 scoring to close out the frame by a score of 25-17. The final six kills of the set for the team all came from six different players.

In the third, Eckerd started off strong with a double-digit lead of 16-6, but was forced to call a timeout following a 5-0 spurt from Saint Leo. The Lions got within four at 18-14 and again at 21-17, but the final four points belonged to the Tritons after three errors helped get Eckerd to the finish line. The Tritons took the set 25-17 to complete the sweep.

All six players who registered kills for Eckerd had at least five, led by Walker with eight to go with her six blocks. Jedrzejczak and Sydney Williams each finished with double figures in digs, with Williams leading the way with 12.

The Tritons improve to 16-12 overall and 6-11 in the SSC. The team will begin a stretch of three straight to close the regular season on Tuesday when they host Florida Tech.
