BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons volleyball team boasted five players with double-digit digs and had 10 team blocks on Saturday as they took down the No. 10 ranked Lynn Fighting Knights on the road by a score of 3-1. It is the Tritons' first win in Boca Raton since the 2018 season.
In a back-and-forth opening set, neither team owned a lead of more than two points until the Tritons overcame a 13-12 deficit with a 5-0 run to move out in front, 17-13. Lynn fought back and eventually went ahead at 19-18, but six straight points from the Tritons that saw a pair of kills from
Kaitlyn Dohs and two straight aces from
Sydney Williams gave the team set point. After the Fighting Knights fended off three straight set points,
Jaelynn Tunley locked up the game with a kill to seal the 25-22 victory.
In set two, Lynn jumped out to an early lead of four, but the Tritons responded by scoring seven of the next eight points to become the first to secure 10 points. Despite the Knights catching up to even the score at 18-18, the Tritons never fell behind and held on for the 25-23 win after seeing six of their final seven points come via kills from six different players. Lynn answered with a 25-20 win in the third to extend the match to a fourth set.
Another close set ensued, with Lynn the first to 10 points and Eckerd the first to 20. Trailing by three, the Knights evened the score at 20 apiece, but the Tritons tallied three of the next four to make it a 23-21 contest. Tunley's kill canceled out a Lynn point to keep the margin at two at 24-22 before an attack error from the home team clinched the match for Eckerd.
The Tritons held the Knights to just .180 hitting on the afternoon and were led defensively by Dohs' 16 digs. Tunley and
Seiler Hruska followed with 15 digs each, while Williams and
Kinga Michalska also reached double figures with 11 apiece. Dohs was the team leader in kills with 15, and Michalska was close behind with 14. Michalska and
Natalie Aniol each racked up four block assists, and
Peyton Walker boasted two solo blocks and three assisted.
With the win, Eckerd improves to 14-10 overall and 4-9 in the SSC. The team will return home to face Florida Southern on Friday.
