Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late score pulls Tritons even with Lions

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons men's soccer team collected a goal in the 88th minute on Wednesday to earn a 2-2 tie with the visiting Saint Leo Lions.

After nearly 40 minutes of scoreless play to begin the game, the Lions struck first with five minutes remaining in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead into the break. Saint Leo doubled up Eckerd in shots through the first 45 minutes of action, with three of the Tritons' four attempts coming in the first 15. Four different players posted attempts in the first for Eckerd. Marcio Costa and Pharrell Williams each saw their looks go on target.

In the second, the 1-0 lead for the visitors remained intact until the Tritons found the equalizing tally in the 67th minute after Daniel Freire secured his third goal of the season on a pass from Harrison Thompson. Saint Leo answered with its second score of the game 10 minutes later, setting up a 2-1 advantage with just 10 minutes left to play. After a pair of shots went unsuccessful both ways, the Tritons again drew even, this time finding the back of the net on a strike by Costa with just 2:17 showing on the clock. The Tritons had one final attempt in the final seconds, but it was saved and the game concluded at a 2-2 score.

As a team, Eckerd finished with eight shots to Saint Leo's 15. Duran Van Woerkom snagged seven shots in net, and Tristan Bassette was credited with the assist on the game-tying tally.

With the result, the Tritons move to 2-5-3 on the season and 0-3-1 in SSC play. The team will remain at home to take on Embry-Riddle on Saturday.
