ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's soccer team earned its fourth clean sheet of the season on Saturday, holding on for a 1-0 Senior Night victory over the Florida Tech Panthers despite a double-digit disadvantage in shots.
Both teams were active on each other's side of the field to begin the game, combining for five total shots through the first 15 minutes of action. In the 17th minute, the Tritons notched the first and only goal of the contest as
Ashley Nelson took a pass from
Olivia Ozbolt and sent it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Panthers out-shot the Tritons 4-1 during the remainder of the half, but the 1-0 score remained intact heading into halftime. Florida Tech held a 6-5 advantage in shots through the opening frame.
Eckerd faced immediate pressure to begin the second half and endured an onslaught of four shots within a four-minute span early on, two of which were saved by goalkeeper
Madi Winn. Nearly 10 minutes later, the Panthers put together another threat, sending off three shots in three minutes, with another two resulting in saves for Winn. In the second half alone, the Panthers out-shot the Tritons 12-2, with seven going on target. All three looks from the visitors that took place in the final five minutes of the game were saved by Winn, and Eckerd held on for the 1-0 victory.Â
Winn finished the night with 10 saves, good for a career high.Â
With the victory, the Tritons improve to 5-5-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the SSC. The team will hit the road to face Tampa on Wednesday.Â
