ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After equalizing in the second half on a penalty kick, the Eckerd women's soccer team could not hold on, falling 2-1 to Saint Leo on Wednesday night at Johnson Field.
The Lions were the first to strike, with a goal in the opening ten minutes. The Tritons pushed on the offensive side with several shots on target that were stifled by the Lions' keeper. In the 31st minute, Amy Woodhead had a chance to even the tally with a penalty kick, but was stopped by Hannah Goetzer. The teams exchanged shots, neither resulting in goals for Saint Leo to take the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Tritons got a second penalty kick chance in the 64th minute, this time with Melina Peloteau converting to bring the score back to even. Freija Aflenzer led the offensive charge for the Tritons, continuing to pressure the Lions' defense. Aflenzer had a chance in the 86th minute to take the lead on a breakaway, but the play was called offsides. Just over a minute later, the Lions scored to regain their lead, for the Tritons to fall by a final score of 2-1.
