ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Eckerd used a pair of large runs in the first half to fuel a 21-point lead at the break, as the Eckerd men's basketball team topped Puerto Rico - Mayaguez, 78-70, at the McArthur Center on Wednesday night.
An early 15-2 run gave Eckerd a 19-7 lead at the 11:20 mark. EC added another large run of 15-2 before taking a 48-27 favor at the break.
Early in the second half, PR - Mayaguez went on a 12-5 run to cut their deficit to 14 at the 11:44 mark. The Tritons maintained a double-digit lead until the final minute when back-to-back triples pulled UPRM within six. However, EC made its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
