ORLANDO, Fla. - The Eckerd women's tennis team lost a back and forth nailbiter to Davenport (Mich.), 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The Panthers (4-6) beat the Tritons (1-5) after earning the doubles point and splitting the singles matches.
Ericka Chavarria and Kylie Misdorp lost a hard-fought No. 1 doubles draw, 7-5, to open play. The Panthers then won the No. 2 doubles slot, with the duo of Alexis Kwasnik and Raia Jagger falling 6-2. Theo Schultz and Lili Reichert owned the No. 3 position, taking the win 6-2.
The singles matchups were close at every position, with each match going either three sets or into a tiebreaker. Chavarria contended with DU's Willemien Coetzee in No. 1 singles before falling 7-6 (7-3) and 6-4. Misdorp got the Tritons back on track with a win against Isabella Carofano 7-6 (7-1) and 6-4 out of the No. 2 draw.
Reichert won her third-set tie break matchup in the No. 4 slot 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8, to even the score 2-2. In the No. 5 slot, DU's Vladislava Shumilova defeated Kwasnik 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2 to take a one-point favor before Julia Triska won in No. 6 singles, beating Charlotte Zhuwakini in a third-set tie break, 7-5, 2-6, and 7-5 to even the score again.
However, the Panthers' Louise Hosking, took the match besting, Schultz in No. 3 singles in a marathon of a match (1-6, 6-3, 12-10).
The Tritons continue their road trip with an SSC contest at Rollins on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
