Dominant Pitching Leads Eckerd Past Malone

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The trio of Andrew Shaw, Drew Martin, and Justin Carrillo combined for a two-hit shutout, leading the Eckerd baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Malone (Ohio) at the Rollins College Tournament on Friday night.

Shaw flirted with a no-hitter, before letting up a hit after five and two-thirds innings, while Martin and Carrillo each threw a hitless inning of relief.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Mikey Burke gave Eckerd a 1-0 lead early following a pair of Malone errors in the second inning. Burke singled to right field with two outs and came all the way around to score on the play following a fielding error and an errant throw.
  • Burke reached on a hit by pitch in the fifth inning and came around to score as Chase Achuff drew a full count bases-loaded walk to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Nick Arrivo led off the sixth with a double to left center and Mitch Donofrio traded places with him two batters later on an RBI double to center. Michael Ballard followed with an RBI single ripped up the middle, giving the Tritons a 4-0 lead.
  • EC tacked on an addition insurance run in the ninth as Achuff battled through an eight pitch at-bat for an RBI double to left field, bringing in Gunner Womer, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Donofrio reached base all four times, going 3-for-3 while also drawing a walk.
  • Achuff added two hits and two RBIs.
  • Shaw allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings while fanning four. Martin threw a perfect eighth inning while Carrillo struck out two in the ninth.
  • Santos Grande's 15 game reached base streak ended, but Achuff extended his streak to nine games.
