Powerful Offense Leads Eckerd Past Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Eckerd baseball team erupted for a season-high 15 hits Saturday afternoon as they took an 11-9 win over Rollins at Alfond Stadium on the third day of the Rollins College Tournament.

Eckerd took a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning thanks to four early RBIs by Mitch Donofrio. However, the Tars evened the score with a five-run fifth inning. The Tritons went in front 8-5 in the next frame only to see Rollins even the score again. EC answered with a run in the seventh to go ahead and added two in the eighth to seal the win.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Tritons put up three runs in the opening frame for an early lead. Chase Achuff led off the inning with a double and came around to score two batters later as Nick Arrivo doubled to left-center for the first run. Mitch Donofrio followed with a two-run homerun for the 3-0 lead.
  • Donofrio smacked an RBI double to left-center in the fourth to bring in Arrivo, who reached on a hit by pitch, to give EC a 4-0 lead.
  • Donofrio delivered once again in the fifth with a solo homerun blasted to left.
  • Rollins rallied to even the score in the bottom of the frame with a five-run inning. Cameron Meehan and Ryan Coleman each hit a two-run homerun in the inning while Torres added another run with an RBI double.
  • Tim Mira and Achuff started the sixth inning with a single and double, respectively to put two runners in scoring position. Sam Cochrane gave Eckerd the lead back with an RBI single scoring Mira before Arrivo plated Achuff with an RBI groundout. Santos Grande gave EC its third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cochrane.
  • Meehan evened the score again for the Tars with a three-run homer to left in the bottom of the inning.
  • Mikey Burke gave Eckerd the lead for good in the seventh inning. He led off the inning with a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a pair of stolen bases before scoring on a wild pitch.
  • EC added two insurance runs in the eight as Grande and Donofrio added an RBI single each.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Donofrio went 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBI's. He finished a triple short of the cycle and had the first multi-homerun game of his career.
  • Cochrane added three hits while Achuff, Michael Ballard, and Mira each had two hits. Both of Achuff's hits were doubles.
  • Eckerd's 15 hits in the game were a season-high.
  • Kyle Durham started the game and did not allow a hit over the first 4.2 innings.
  • Jarid Salisbury earned the win in his first appearance of the season.
  • Achuff collected his fourth save of the season. It was the 11th of his career, moving him into a tie for second in program history.
