Eckerd Falls to Spring Hill in Series Finale

MOBILE, Ala. – The Eckerd baseball team rallied for a run in the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to make up the gap as they fell in the third game of the series with Spring Hill, 6-3, at the Historic Stan Galle Field Sunday afternoon. 

After Spring Hill scored early in the second inning, the Tritons responded to even the score in the third.  However, SHC added a run in the fourth for the lead before adding another three runs in the eighth.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Spring Hill got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Joseph Guidry tripled to start the inning and he scored two batters later on a single to center to give SHC and early 1-0 lead.
  • EC evened the score in the next frame as Mikey Burke hit an RBI single to shortstop to score Cameron Wademan, who doubled to left to lead off the inning.
  • The Badgers took the lead back in the third inning as Mason Bonnaffons drove in Cade Simpson with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Eckerd looked to threaten in the fourth as Mitch Donofrio reached third with only one out following a double to left and a wild pitch. However, the Tritons were unable to push a run across.
  • SHC added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to center. The Badgers loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning as they looked to add another run, but Jake Sanderson and the Triton defense turned a double play to escape the jam.
  • EC narrowed the gap to one run in the eighth inning. Sam Cochrane reached via an error to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on Burke's single and an error on the play and later came around to score on Donofrio's sacrifice fly to center.
  • The Badgers, however, added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 6-2 lead. SHC scored a pair of runs with the bases loaded on a single and a sacrifice fly before scoring the final run on a single to center.
  • The Tritons rallied in the ninth for a run but were unable to make up the difference. Michael Ballard singled and advanced to second following an error on the play to lead off the inning. Cochrane quickly brought him in with an RBI single to left field. Burke then gave EC two runners on after he was hit by a pitch, but EC couldn't push another run across.
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Burke collected three hits and an RBI while Ballard added two hits.
  • Burke also had two stolen bases.
  • Burke finished the series going 7-for-11 and a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts.  
  • Kyle Durham picked up the loss allowing three runs over five innings of work.
  • The loss snaps a five-game winning streak against Spring Hill.
