Tritons Drop Conference Opener to Lynn

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A late eighth-inning rally fell short as the Eckerd baseball team fell to Lynn, 9-6, as the Tritons opened Sunshine State Conference play Friday night at the Turley Athletic Complex
 
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, but Lynn responded with eight unanswered runs. EC rallied in the eighth, scoring four runs off two hits but couldn't overcome the deficit.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd got on the board early following a Mikey Burke walk and Sam Cochrane reaching on a Lynn error. With runners on the corners, Cochrane stole second and advanced to third on a Knights'  throwing error that skipped into center field, scoring Burke. Santos Grande grounded out to first base to drive in Cochrane for EC's second run.
  • The Fighting Knights took the lead in the third inning with six runs. Lynn loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single and added four RBI singles, a walk, and an RBI groundout in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.
  • An inning later, Lynn added to its lead as Danny Berg ripped a single down the right-field line to drive in two runs and take an 8-2 lead.
  • In the eighth, Achuff got on board with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cochrane then singled through the right side, driving in Achuff for EC's third run. Cochrane stole second and third before scoring on a triple from Mitch Donofrio down the left field line. With two outs in the inning, Brock Hutchinson reached base on a Lynn error as Donofrio and Nick Arrivo scored on the miscue as the Tritons only trailed 8-6.
  • Lynn added an insurance run in the ninth after a run scored from third on a wild pitch. 
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Cochrane led EC with two hits, two runs scored, an RBI, and a career-high four stolen bases.
  • Achuff added two hits and a run scored.
  • Donofrio's triple is the second of his career. 
  • Collin Bakken picked up five strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.
