Tritons Drop Two at Old Coast Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Eckerd softball team struggled to score despite racking up 11 hits on the day as they fell to No. 24 Valdosta State (Ga.) 3-2 and Flagler (Fla.) 6-1 on the second day of the Old Coast Classic at Flagler Field Saturday.
 
Ally Costa smashed a homerun in the opening at-bat of the game and Hannah Famiano ripped an RBI double in the fourth, but the Blazers were quick to answer for the lead in the bottom of both innings. 
 
Meredith McGinnis tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning of the finale, but a four-run sixth inning propelled the Saints over Eckerd.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • Costa wasted little time getting the Tritons on the board as she took a 2-2 pitch deep to right-center field in the opening at-bat of the game to give EC a quick 1-0 lead.
  • Valdosta State answered quickly in the bottom of the first inning as Logan Hill drove in two runs with a single to left field.
  • Eckerd tied the game in the top of the fourth with a two-out double to center field from Famiano that brought Brooklyn Cardona around to score.
  • The Blazers capitalized on a pair of Triton errors in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored on a sacrifice bunt to first base for their third run of the game. 
Game 2
  • Flagler struck first in the third inning as they scored off an error after a pair of singles in the inning. 
  • With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, McGinnis ripped a two-out single to center field that drove in Kayelee Newstrom to tie the game at 1-1. The Blazers managed to get out of the inning stranding three Tritons on base. 
  • The Saints quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center field by Natalie Murphy to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Flagler added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double to center field by Morgan Murphy and an RBI ground out to short. With a runner on first, Paige Maseda homered to center field to give the Saints a 6-1 lead.
 
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Hannah Perkins picked up four strikeouts in her second complete game of the season. She allowed just three hits over six innings. 
  • Costa's homerun was her first of the season and the second of her career, both of which have come at Flagler field.
  • Costa went 4-for-8 on the day, she is batting .556 on the season.
  • Kensley Durrance struck out four batters over six innings in her second complete game of the season. She has 18 strikeouts through five games.

"We need to find a way to overcome adversity and respond when things don't go our way," said head coach Katie Profitt. "We need to keep pushing and rely on the fundamentals that we work on every single day."
