Eckerd Dominates Spring Hill for Doubleheader Sweep


MOBILE, Ala. – The Eckerd baseball team combined for 23 hits and 18 runs while limiting Spring Hill (Ala.) to just four runs over both games Saturday afternoon as the Tritons earned a pair of wins, 11-3 and 7-1, at the Historic Stan Galle Field.

Eckerd claimed an early lead in the opener after scoring five runs over the first three innings before adding to its lead with five runs in the seventh inning.

The Tritons grabbed another early lead in the second game with a run in the opening frame before exploding for six runs in the sixth inning while Andrew Shaw threw seven dominant innings on the mound to keep the Badgers off the board.

KEY MOMENTS
Game One
  • Robin Allen worked out of a jam in the first inning. He issued a pair of walks and a single to load the bases, but he settled down and coaxed two popups to come out of the inning unscathed. 
  • The Tritons jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the second inning. Nick Arrivo ripped a two-run triple to left-center to score Santos Grande and Mitch Donofrio, who reached on a pair of hits to lead off the inning. Michael Ballard added a run as he plated Arrivo with a groundout to shortstop. 
  • EC tacked on a pair of runs in the next frame for a 5-0 lead. Sam Cochrane led off the stanza with a single before advancing to third on a stolen base and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. He came around to score following an error on an attempted double steal. Grande drove in the next run with an RBI double down the right field line.
  • SHC opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a Daniel Seres homerun. The Badgers followed with another pair of runs on an RBI double and RBI groundout to pull within two runs.
  • Grande gave Eckerd a three-run lead with an RBI single to center field scoring Mikey Burke in the fifth inning.
  • EC added five insurance runs in the fifth inning. Grande added the first run with an RBI double to right-center before Arrivo roped a bases-loaded double to left field to score Chase Achuff and Weston Wiles for the next two runs. Donofrio scored on a balk before Ballard plated Arrivo with a single up the middle to give Eckerd an 11-3 lead.
Game Two 
  • Grande got Eckerd on the board early with an RBI single to center field driving in Burke, who reached on an infield single to third before advancing to second on a stolen base. 
  • After allowing the first two batters of the game to reach, Andrew Shaw settled down to retire the next 12 batters before allowing his first hit of the game in the fifth inning.
  • The Tritons erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Achuff led off the inning with a single to center before Grande was hit by a pitch and Mitch Donofrio drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Achuff scored off a Badgers error during Arrivo's at-bat before Ballard plated a run with a sacrifice fly to right. After an SHC pitching change, Joe Gallagher drove in Donofrio with a double down the right field line. Cochrane drove in a run with a single as Gallagher also scored on the play taking advantage of a Spring Hill throwing error. Burke drove in EC's final run of the inning with an infield single.  
  • The Badgers finally got on the board in the eighth inning. After a leadoff double, Grayson Williams drove in a run with a single to through the left side. 
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Grande went 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener. He collected another hit and RBI in the second game.
  • Arrivo had two hits in the opener while recording four RBIs.
  • Burke and Gallagher each had three hits in the finale.
  • Allen picked up his first win of the season, allowing three runs over 4.1 innings in the opener. Justin Carrillo threw 1.2 perfect innings of relief before giving way to Collin Bakken, who threw a hitless inning.  
  • Shaw earned the win in the second game, throwing seven scoreless innings allowing just three hits while fanning seven.
  • Eckerd combined for 23 hits over both games.
QUOTABLE
"It was a great day for us," said head coach Josh Beaureguard. "We had some great hitting and good timely hitting."

Eckerd looks to sweep the three-game series tomorrow with a single game at 1:00 PM.
