Tritons Drop Opener at Old Coast Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Eckerd softball team racked up nine hits in the opening game of the Old Coast Classic at Flagler College, but it wasn't enough to top No. 24 Valdosta State (Ga.) as they fell to the Blazers 8-2 Friday afternoon at Flagler Field.

The Blazers built an early lead in the second inning as they scored five runs capped with a two-run homerun. The Tritons scored in the fourth and sixth innings, but EC couldn't cut down the deficit.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Tritons threatened to score early after loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning following a single from Lauren Margolis, a hit by pitch to Meredith McGinnis, and a walk drawn by Skylar Redish. However, Valdosta State got out of the inning without allowing a run.
  • The Blazers jumped out to a quick lead in the second inning as they scored five runs on four hits. The Blazers added runs in the inning on a Triton error, an RBI single, and a double steal before a two-out two-run homerun to center field gave them a quick 5-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Redish ripped a single to left field to start the inning for EC and Kaylin Kramer followed with a double to right-center field. With runners on second and third, River Glenn battled with an 0-2 count to score Redish as she grounded out to second to put the Tritons on the board.
  • The Blazers added to their lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Glenn singled down the left field line to move Kayelee Newstrom into scoring position. Hannah Famiano smashed a two-out double to left-center to score Newstrom. The Blazers got out of the inning, leaving the two runners on base as Eckerd trailed 6-2.
  • With runners on second and third, Valdosta State built their lead to 8-2 in the top of the seventh inning following an Eckerd error.
