Tritons Fall to Florida Southern in Midweek Matchup

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Florida Southern jumped out to an early lead in the second inning while the Triton bats struggled to get going as the Eckerd baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference game with Florida Southern Tuesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Florida Southern struck first with three runs in the second inning. Zack Diewert scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a single before Cody Duke added two runs on a single up the middle. 
  • Eckerd rallied for a run in the bottom of the frame. Santos Grande won an eight-pitch at bat with a single lined to right field to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball before a Michael Ballard sacrifice fly to right brought in Grande. 
  • Jarrod Cande made it a 4-1 lead for the Mocs with a homerun to left in the fourth inning. 
  • Diewert led off the sixth inning with a single and Chris Maglich brought him in with a double as FSC took a 5-1 lead. 
  • The Tritons threatened in the bottom of the frame as a pair of runners got on with no outs. Cameron Wademan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Mikey Burke followed with a single through the right side, but Eckerd was unable to push a run across. 
  • EC got another two runners aboard in the eighth inning as Tim Mira was hit by pitch and Burke again followed with a single. However, Eckerd was unable to plate a run.
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Burke accounted for two of Eckerd's hit while Grande collected EC's other hit of the night.
  • Jake Sanderson took the loss allowing four runs over four innings.
  • Collin Bakken threw two scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts while Chase Achuff threw a scoreless ninth. 
  • Justin Carrillo threw a perfect eighth inning on just 10 pitches.

"I thought we competed well tonight," said head coach Josh Beauregard.
