Tritons Fall to Late Spartans' Rally

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After taking an early 8-1 lead, No. 7 Tampa rallied for nine runs over the last four innings as they defeated the Eckerd baseball team, 10-8, in a non-conference matchup at the Turley Athletic Complex Tuesday night.

Eckerd scored four runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a two-run homer by Mitch Donofrio. The Tritons added another four runs over the next three innings as they took an 8-1 lead into the sixth. However, the Spartans scored nine unanswered runs in the sixth through ninth innings to take the win.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Spartans got on the board in the opening frame as a run scored off a wild pitch.
  • Eckerd responded to score four runs all before the first out in the bottom of the frame. A string of three straight doubles by Mikey Burke, Chase Achuff, and Sam Cochrane led to the first two runs before Mitch Donofrio hit a two-run homerun down the left field line to give EC a 4-1 lead.
  • The Tritons added another two runs in the third inning. Donofrio led off the inning with a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Nick Arrivo brought him in with a single lined to left. Santos Grande doubled in the ensuing at-bat to put runners on second and third and Brock Hutchinson brought in Arrivo with a sacrifice fly to left field.
  • Arrivo gave Eckerd an 8-1 lead in the fourth inning with a two-run single to left field scoring Achuff and Cochrane, who both hit a pair of one-out singles.
  • Tampa rallied for five runs in the sixth inning. Luke McDonald brought in the first run with a bases-loaded single before the next run scored on a sacrifice fly. John Pichman then made it an 8-6 game with a three-run homerun to left.
  • A solo homerun by the Spartans pulled them within one run in the eighth inning.
  • Tampa then loaded the bases in the ninth on a single, double, and a walk. The Spartans scored the tying run on Triton error before Christian Flint hit a two-run single to give UT a 10-8 lead.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Arrivo led Eckerd going 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Achuff collected three hits and an RBI.
  • EC's No. 1 through No. 5 hitters – Burke, Achuff, Cochrane, Donofrio, and Arrivo- combined for 13 of the team's 14 hits, as they all recorded a multi-hit game.
  • Santos Grande recorded a hit in tonight's game to extend his reached base streak to all 11 games this season.
  • Jake Sanderson started the game, scattering four hits over five innings while striking out four.
