Tritons Split Twinbill with Lynn

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd baseball team combined for 13 hits over both games as they split the doubleheader with Lynn on Saturday at the Turley Athletic Complex. The Tritons took game one, 4-1, but fell to the Fighting Knights 6-1 in the finale.
 
EC jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after Sam Cochrane roped an RBI double to left center. The Tritons capitalized on an error and a fielder's choice in the seventh to add two more runs to their lead. Andrew Shaw pitched seven innings while allowing only two hits and fanning three batters. 
 
After Lynn took a two-run edge in the opening frame, the Tritons answered with a run in the fifth to split the lead. The Knights built their lead to three runs in the seventh and capped their scoring with a homerun in the ninth.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • Achuff put the first hit on the board for Eckerd in the first inning after sending a 1-1 pitch to center field for a single. Cochrane followed crushing a double to left center field, driving in Achuff from first as the Tritons took a 1-0 lead.
  • EC added to its lead in the seventh inning following a Cameron Wademan walk. Wademan advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored following a Lynn error. After another walk to Mikey Burke, Achuff reached on a Knights' error. Cochrane then sent a ball to second base and reached on a fielder's choice that scored Tim Mira
  • Lynn broke the shutout in the eighth inning after a single and a Triton error put runners on first and second. Trevor Romeo singled up the middle to drive in a run as they cut the deficit down to 3-1.
  • The Tritons added another run to their lead in the bottom portion of the eighth after Nick Arrivo roped a double to right center. Arrivo moved to third after a wild pitch and scored on a Wademan groundout to second base.
  • Achuff then entered in the ninth. He allowed a single before retiring the side to preserve the win.
 
Game 2
  • The Knights broke out early with a three-hit, two-run, first inning. A lead-off single followed by a double put both runners in scoring position as Romeo singled to first to drive in the first run. Lynn added another run two batters later after a run scored on a throw down to second base. 
  • Wademan sent a one-out single to right-center in the fifth inning as the Tritons worked to get on the board. After a failed pick-off attempt by the Knights skipped away from the first baseman, Wademan advanced to second base. Wademan then stole third base and scored as Burke singled on a chopper to the shortstop.  
  • In the seventh inning, Lynn got a runner aboard with a one-out walk and a groundout and a balk moved the runner to third base. An RBI single up the middle gave the Knights a 3-1 lead. Lynn continued to build on its lead with a single, driving in a run from second and then an RBI double down the left-field line.
  • Liam O'Regan capped the Fighting Knights scoring in the ninth frame with a homerun to centerfield. 
 
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Cochrane went 2-for-3 in the opener with two RBIs and a double. He picked up four hits and five total stolen bases in the series. He now has 40 career stolen bases moving into tied for 13th in program history. 
  • Achuff added five hits in the series and picked up his first save of the season in the first game of the doubleheader.  He now has eight career saves, which ranks seventh in program history, 
  • Shaw earned his second win of the season, throwing seven innings while allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.

The Tritons remain home as they host Tampa on Tuesday at 6:00 PM for a nonconference matchup at the Turley Athletic Complex.
