Late Bats Drive Tritons to Two Walk-Offs Over Barry

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Two walk-offs capped late rallies in both games of Saturday's doubleheader as the Eckerd softball team edged Barry at the Turley Athletic Complex. The Tritons hammered 18 total hits as they routed the Buccaneers 2-1 and 6-5, respectively. 
 
In the opener, Kaylin Kramer doubled down the left field line to drive in Ally Costa to tie the game at 1-1. Skylar Redish followed with an RBI single to center to send Kramer home for a walk-off victory.
 
After back-to-back singles, Costa followed by ripping a double to left center field, driving in both Kayelee Newstrom and Brooklyn Cardona as the Tritons walked  off again to sweep Barry.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • The Buccaneers struck first with a run the third inning. Taylor Checkley singled through the right side and Cassandra Lee quickly doubled her in to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Eckerd loaded the bases in the third inning following a pair of walks to Costa and River Glenn and a single from Kramer, but EC was unable to push a run across. 
  • Kensley Durrance only allowed one hit after the third inning while striking out eight batters over six innings as the Tritons still trailed the Bucs heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Costa drew a walk to lead off the seventh before she advanced to third on a Lauren Margolis ground out and a wild pitch. Kramer ripped a double down the left field line to plate Costa and even the game at 1-1.Kramer advaced to third on a wild pitch and Redish immediately followed with a walk-off single into center field to score Kramer as the Tritons took the first game of the doubleheader, 2-1.
 
Game 2
  • Similar to game one, Barry jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Payton Germer drew a walk to bring the first  run home. Kayla Posten then scored Checkley with a sacrifice fly to left to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Tritons answered quickly in the bottom of the frame. Lauren Margolis, Kramer, and Redish all walk to load the bases and River Glenn worked another walk to score the first run. Hannah Famiano then singled to the shortstop, driving Kramer in from third and tying the game at two runs apiece.
  • Barry took another one-run lead in the second inning after Savannah Starling singled and stole second before she came around to score on a Triton throwing error as they went ahead 3-2.
  • In the top of the fourth, Starling reached first on a fielder's choice and then stole second. She then stole third base and was able to score after another Triton throwing miscue. 
  • Costa crushed a one-out single up the middle to start Eckerd's offense in the bottom of the fourth. Kramer followed with another double to left center, scoring Costa as EC only trailed by one run.
  • Following the common theme, Starling singled and then stole second in the sixth inning and she came around to score for the Buccaneers on an Eckerd error.
  • The Tritons pulled within one run on an RBI single from Kramer in the sixth. With Madison Dilgard pinch-running at first and Costa on second, Kramer ripped a single to right field to drive in Costa as Barry now led 5-4. 
  • Durrance worked a one-two-three seventh inning to quickly bring the Tritons back up to bat. Meredith McGinnins and Newstrom hit two straight singles and Jessica Wilson grounded out to the pitcher and moved both runners into scoring position setting the table for Costa.  With two outs, Costa hammered a deep ball to left center field with a two-run walk-off double.
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Kramer went 4-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and two doubles.
  • Famiano also had four hits, going 4-for-6 with a run scored. She finished the series 6-for-9 and she now leads EC with a .462 batting average.
  • Durrance collected both wins on the day fanning 13 batters over 13 innings. She only allowed three earned runs as she advanced to 3-2 on the season. She threw three innings in relief in the opener, scattering three hits. 
  • Costa lost her seven-game hitting streak to start the season but continued her on-base streak to all nine games this season with two walks in game one and two hits in game two.
  • The Tritons have now won the last five matchups against the Buccaneers.
 
QUOTABLE
"Kensley [Durrance] did a great job for us today in the circle. We had a couple really clutch hits from Kaylin [Kramer] in both games and Ally [Costa] in the second game," said head coach Katie Profitt. "It wasn't our sharpest performance today, but I will take the wins."

The Tritons remain at home as they host Virginia-Wise with a doubleheader Monday evening starting at 5:00 PM
