Dominant First Half Propels Tritons Over Lynn

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Mikayla Kuehne led the Triton offense with a career-high 21 points as the Eckerd women's basketball team cruised to a 69-55 victory over Lynn at the McArthur Center Saturday afternoon.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Lynn opened the game with a 6-2 run to take an early lead. However, EC answered with 10 straight points to claim a 12-6 lead. With two minutes remaining in the quarter, Brooke Juday hit a 3-pointer sending the Tritons on an 8-2 scoring run to end the quarter with a 22-10 lead.
  • Fighting Knights' Dani Lozzi drained a triple to start the second quarter, but Octavia Loll answered with a layup to send the Tritons on a 14-4 run. The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter. Mikayla Kuehne nailed a triple from the top of the key just before the half, allowing Eckerd to go into the half with a 17 point lead at 43-26.​​​​​​​
  • Following a layup from Eneritz Larranaga just two minutes into the half, the Tritons strung together a 12-4 scoring stretch. Lynn answered with seven straight points of their own, but another layup from Loll and a free throw from Kuehne kept EC on top by 19 points as they took a 58-39 lead to end the third.
  • The Tritons came out strong in the fourth quarter as Kuehne and Larranaga hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Kuehne hit another triple a minute later to give Eckerd its largest lead of the game of 26 points. The Fighting Knights battled back with a 14-2 run to end the game, but Eckerd breezed to a 14-point victory. 
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Kuehne's 21 points set a career-high while Zoe Richards added 12 points.
  • Larranaga led EC with a career-high eight rebounds as Eckerd held a 36-28 advantage on the boards. Richards added seven rebounds and Loll posted six. 
  • Richards and Loll each grabbed three steals as well. 
  • The Tritons had 40 points in the paint compared to Lynn's 24.
  • Eckerd shot 50.9 percent from field goal range and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. EC has now shot 50.0 percent or above for the seventh time this season. 
QUOTABLE 
"This was our most complete game to date. We had great energy defensively and on the boards, which set the tone throughout the game," said head coach Paul Honsinger. "We also moved the ball well and knocked down open shots on offense for a balanced attack."

The Tritons go on the road as they head to Florida Tech to take on the Panthers Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
