WINTER PARK, Fla. - Victoria Grant scored less than a minute into overtime as the Eckerd women's soccer team walked away with a 1-0 victory over Colorado Christian in a neutral-site match at Rollins College.
Eckerd won the ball from the Cougars and sent a long ball downfield toward Grant. Grant corralled the ball off the bounce, dribbled through a pair of defenders into the box, and lofted a left-footed shot just underneath the crossbar for the golden goal.
It was EC's second straight 1-0 win to start the season.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 1, Colorado Christian 0
Scoring Summary: EC - Grant 91' (unassisted)
Records: Eckerd 2-0; CCU 2-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After an early shot by Alyssa Farmer narrowly missed off the left post, the Cougars controlled the run of play in the first 20-plus minutes earning six corner kicks along the way. The Triton defense, however, made it difficult for CCU to get a quality look at the frame.
- Eckerd began to create chances midway through the first half and had a pair of excellent opportunities come up short. Kaliya Eutsey dribbled between two defenders to the top of the six-yard box in the 27th minute but her shot barely missed the right post. Â Moments later, Grant did the same thing and rocketed a close-range shot that was saved by Ashleigh Maguire.
- CCU had a clear look at the frame in the 79th minute off a set piece that led to Sarah Butler finding herself in a one-on-one with Casey Winn. Butler sent a low strike toward the left post, but Winn made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
- Grant had a shot late in regulation, extending out for a slow pass in an attempt to chip it over the keeper but didn't get the ball high enough.
- Less than a minute into overtime, Sophia Kopko won possession in the defensive third and sent a long ball downfield. Grant dribbled through a pair of defenders and sent a perfect left-footed strike underneath the crossbar for the golden goal.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Grant's goal was her first official college goal; however, the freshman had a goal and an assist in EC's exhibition win over ASA Miami last weekend.
- Winn stopped three shots in posting her second clean sheet of the season and 15th of her career. Â She needs five more to tie Morgan Crescent for the most in program history.
- Eckerd held a slight edge in shots (10-7) and shots on goal (4-3) while CCU took seven corner kicks to just one for Eckerd.
